As far as being a "greatest hits collection' maybe in hindsight, but when the album actually came out in Nov. 1972 these were mostly all "new" songs then. As far as Pigpen being "better than Spring '71", well all I can say is that his songwriting had certainly matured with songs like "The Stranger" (Two Souls In Communion, Mr. Charlie, and Chinatown Shuffle. His performances were heroic considering he was slowly dying of sclerosis of the liver. There are many great Pigpen performances on the Europe '72 tour. Check out the version of Good Lovin' from 5/11/72 for some vintage Pig, or about any version of Two Souls on that tour. Pigpen sounded pretty good, he just wasn't stretching out like in other years. His songs were more R&B flavored than in previous years. He was writing songs again, instead of just falling back on his standard tunes. As far as The Deads jamming goes you can start with 4/8/72 Dark Star>Sugar Magnolia>Caution, 5/10/72 Truckin'>Drums>The Other One>Me & Bobby McGhee>The Other One>Wharf Rat, 4/29/72's second set, or any one of the Dark Stars performed like 4/8,4/17,4/24,4/29,5/4,5/7,5/11, 5/18, 5/23 and 5/25 played on the tour. If they got better in '73 and '74 that still does not mean that these shows were not a powerhouse of a tour, maybe the best tour ever as a whole. I can't really find a weak show on the whole tour and I have all of them that circulate. Europe '72 as a record didn't really do these shows justice anyway with all the overdubbing they did on them that gave the record an antiseptic feel. Get the actual soundboards to really hear these shows before you dismiss this tour. You won't be disappointed!
